Upcoming Changes- No disruption to current adjudicative services

As part of the proposed Protecting Ontario’s Food Independence Act, 2026, Ontario is proposing to merge two separate adjudicative bodies that perform similar tasks – the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal (AFRAAT) and the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board (NFPPB) into one tribunal to streamline services.

Consolidating the two agencies into the new Agriculture and Agri-Food Protection Tribunal (AAPT) to handle agricultural disputes will reduce red tape for farmers, property owners and municipalities, and ensure a more streamlined client experience.

The AFRAAT and NFPPB will continue to operate as usual, with no disruption to current adjudicative services until further notice. For more information on the proposed merger and timelines for this transition, please contact the Agricultural Information Contact Centre at ag.info.omafa@ontario.ca or 1-877-424-1300.

The Normal Farm Practices Protection Board (the “Board” or “NFPPB”) was established by the Farming and Food Production Protection Act, 1998, to resolve disputes regarding agricultural operations and to determine what constitutes a normal farm practice. In performing that function, the board seeks to achieve the stated goal of the legislature in balancing the needs of the agricultural community with provincial health, safety and environmental concerns.
